Marcelo Mayen is a Brooklyn-based photographer whose work explores the strange, humorous, and sometimes unsettling moments hiding within everyday life. His approach to photography follows a simple instinct: disrupt reality just enough.
His photographs often begin with familiar places, objects, and situations before introducing something unexpected. Humor plays an important role in his work, but there is always something beneath it. Every photograph has something to say, even when exactly what it says is left to the viewer.
Marcelo currently works primarily with a Hasselblad X2D 100C, creating highly detailed photographs intended to exist as physical objects and large-scale prints. His practice also includes an ongoing body of 35mm film photography, which continues to have a loyal following among collectors.
Marcelo is also the founder and curator of Dreams On Command Gallery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he exhibits his own work alongside artists whose work shares his interest in strong visual storytelling.
