Neighbors Wasn’t Exactly Planned

After There Are People Here, I took down some of the art and invited a few new artists to show their work. The idea was simple: put together an “in-between” collection while we prepared for our next exhibition.

Then one day, after everything was hung, I was sitting on the bench looking around the gallery when something dawned on me.

Wait a minute. Everyone on these walls is a Greenpoint-based artist.

Boom. Neighbors was born.

In the spirit of how organically the whole thing came together, I decided DOC should throw a reception the following week celebrating the Greenpoint artists on our walls and the neighborhood that brought all of us together.

That gave me one week to put it together and get the word out.

It was bold. I genuinely wasn’t sure anyone would show up.

And then people did.

Artists, friends, neighbors, collectors, people we knew and people we’d never met before came through the doors to spend an evening together.

This is why I love Greenpoint.

Sometimes an exhibition doesn’t begin with a year of planning, a giant curatorial statement, or some elaborate master plan. Sometimes you hang the work, sit down on a bench, look around, and realize the exhibition was already there.
